Project: Rietveld 2.0: Revealing Rietveld's Joint

Year: 2012

Program: Furniture Design

Advisor: Sekou Cooke, ARC500.3

Rietveld 2.0 is an exploration into the techniques of 20th-century Dutch furniture designer and architect, Gerrit Rietveld.

This interpretation reveals the hidden wood dowels used in his famous three-axis joint by means of extension and contrast.

Additionally, the dowel was re-interpreted as an element that is both structural and operative, in which a table surface can be manually lowered to become seating.

Wooden members were proportionally maintained at a 2cm square thickness throughout the piece.
